Pet Stain & Odor Removal

Pet Stain & Odor Removal

A pet accident is not like other carpet stains. Coffee sits on the surface. Urine soaks through. It travels past the carpet fibers, through the backing, into the pad below, and sometimes into the subfloor. That is why the odor comes back weeks later even after the surface looks clean. The visible stain was never the whole problem.

Super Clean Carpet Cleaning handles pet stain and odor removal for homes across Idaho Falls and the Treasure Valley. We treat the contamination at the source, not just the surface. If you have been dealing with lingering pet odors or stains that keep reappearing, we can help.

What Pet Urine Actually Does to Carpet

Urine is a complex liquid. It contains uric acid, a compound that crystallizes as it dries. Those crystals bond to carpet fibers and pad material. They do not dissolve in water. That is why mopping, steam cleaning with plain water, or household carpet cleaners often fail. The crystals stay behind, and every time humidity rises, they release odor back into the room.

Bacteria compound the problem. Urine is a breeding ground for microorganisms that produce the strong ammonia-like smell associated with pet accidents. The longer the contamination sits, the more the bacteria multiply and the deeper the odor sets in.

Older accidents are harder to treat because the urine has had time to soak deeper. It may have reached the subfloor, which is porous and can hold odor for years if not properly treated. Surface cleaning cannot reach any of this.

For homes dealing with pet accidents on multiple surfaces, our carpet cleaning service handles the carpet, our upholstery cleaning service handles fabric furniture, and our tile and grout cleaning service treats hard floors where urine has reached the grout lines.

Why Some Pet Stains Cannot Be Fully Removed

We want to be honest about what professional treatment can and cannot do.

Fresh accidents, treated quickly, usually come out completely. The urine has not had time to bond deeply with the fibers, and the contamination is mostly still in the carpet and pad.

Accidents that have set for weeks or months are harder. The uric acid crystals have bonded to the fibers. The bacteria have multiplied. The urine may have reached the subfloor. Even with professional treatment, some discoloration may remain, and some odor may persist in extreme cases.

Accidents that have damaged the carpet fibers themselves — through repeated exposure or through chemical burns from improper cleaning attempts — may leave permanent marks. The carpet fibers may have lost their dye or their structure.

We tell you what to expect before we start. If a stain is likely to be permanent, we say so. If treatment may reduce the odor but not eliminate it completely, we say so. No false promises.

Where Pet Accidents Happen

We treat pet contamination on every surface it reaches.

Carpet. The most common surface for pet accidents. Urine soaks through the fibers and into the pad.

Area rugs. Similar to carpet but often with a different backing. Some rugs can be treated on-site; others need to be cleaned at our facility.

Upholstery. Furniture cushions, sofas, and chairs absorb urine the same way carpet does. Our upholstery cleaning service handles fabric pieces.

Hard floors. Tile and grout can absorb urine odor if the contamination has reached the grout lines. Our tile and grout cleaning service addresses hard surfaces.

Subfloor. In severe cases, urine reaches the subfloor below the carpet. We discuss subfloor treatment options when this happens.

How We Treat Pet Stains and Odors

The goal of pet treatment is to break down the uric acid crystals, kill the odor-causing bacteria, and extract the contamination from every layer it has reached.

Step 1 — Locate the contamination. We use a UV blacklight to find the full extent of the accident. Urine glows under UV light, which reveals stains that are not visible to the naked eye. This step is critical because what looks like a small surface stain often reveals a much larger area of contamination below.

Step 2 — Treat with enzyme solution. Enzyme-based cleaners break down the uric acid crystals that cause odor. Standard cleaning solutions do not do this. The enzyme treatment needs time to work, so we apply it and let it dwell before extraction.

Step 3 — Sub-surface extraction. For accidents that have reached the pad, we use specialized tools to flush the contamination out of the pad and extract it. This step is what prevents the odor from returning weeks later.

Step 4 — Odor neutralization. After extraction, we treat the area with a neutralizer that eliminates any remaining odor compounds. This is not a masking agent. It breaks down the molecules that cause the smell.

Step 5 — Repeat treatment if needed. Severe or older stains may require more than one treatment. We assess the results and repeat if necessary.

For accidents that have reached the subfloor, we discuss options. In some cases, subfloor treatment is possible. In others, the affected section of subfloor may need to be sealed or replaced.

What Affects the Cost

Pricing depends on the extent of the contamination and how long it has been there. Several factors affect the total:

  • Number of affected areas. Multiple spots cost more than a single accident.

  • Size of each area. Large accidents take more treatment solution and more time.

  • Age of the contamination. Older stains need more treatment and may require repeat visits.

  • Surface type. Carpet, rugs, upholstery, and hard floors each require different methods.

  • Depth of contamination. Accidents that reached the pad or subfloor require more extensive work.

  • Repeat treatments. Severe cases may need more than one visit to fully address the odor.

What You Can Do Before We Arrive

A few steps before our visit help the treatment work better.

Do not use steam or hot water. Heat can set the stain and bond the uric acid crystals more deeply into the fibers. If you have already tried steam cleaning, let us know.

Do not use ammonia-based cleaners. Urine contains ammonia. Ammonia-based cleaners can actually attract pets back to the same spot.

Blot fresh accidents. Use paper towels or a clean cloth to absorb as much liquid as possible. Do not rub, which pushes the urine deeper.

Mark the areas. If you know where accidents have happened, mark them with tape or note the locations. The UV light will find them, but your input helps.

Keep pets away from treated areas. Once we finish, keep pets off the carpet until it is fully dry. If repeat treatment is needed, we will let you know.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you remove all pet stains?

Not always. Fresh accidents usually come out completely. Older stains that have set for months, or stains that have damaged the carpet fibers, may leave permanent discoloration. We tell you what to expect before we start.

Can you remove all pet odors?

Most odors can be significantly reduced or eliminated with proper treatment. Very old or severe contamination that has reached the subfloor may require repeat treatments or subfloor repair.

How long does pet treatment take?

The treatment itself may take one to three hours depending on the extent of the contamination. Severe cases may require more time or a follow-up visit.

What is the UV light for?

The UV blacklight reveals urine stains that are not visible to the naked eye. This ensures we treat the full extent of the contamination, not just the visible surface.

Why do I need enzyme treatment?

Standard cleaning solutions cannot break down the uric acid crystals that cause pet odor. Enzyme treatments break those crystals down so they can be extracted.

Can you treat pet stains on upholstery?

Yes. Our upholstery cleaning service handles pet stains on fabric furniture.

Do you treat pet stains on hard floors?

Yes. Urine that has reached tile and grout can cause odor. Our tile and grout cleaning service addresses those surfaces.
